Taking Vitamins Can Prevent Senility

Taking Vitamins Can Prevent Senility
~ by Dr. Cherry ~

Recent research presented in the prestigious medical journal, Neurology, presented a study from the Hawaii University. In the study, persons who used certain supplements were less likely to suffer vascular dementia, which is the second most common form of senility following Alzheimers disease.

Two vitamins in particular stood out - vitamins E and C. Those persons taking both vitamins E and C were 88% less likely to have vascular dementia and 69% less likely to have other types of dementia. Hardening of the small arteries leading to the brain typically causes vascular dementia.

Often this type dementia is really caused by a mini stroke. These strokes are frequently so small that we are not even aware of them except for minute damage to the brain which presents itself eventually with dementia, senility, forgetfulness, and so on.

The study went on to speculate that these particular supplements provide protection against the cell membrane injury and the brain cells themselves. Pray about getting yourself on a good balanced nutrient supplement, however, rather than just taking vitamins E and C or any other vitamin by themselves.

God created the various vitamins, minerals, plant extracts, etc. to work together, and to enhance and protect each other. Your ideal daily supplement should include 800 IU of natural vitamin E (labeled D-alpha plus tocopherols) and 2000 mg. of vitamin C (1000 units twice a day) to protect yourself against senility.

A related study presented in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition illustrated yet another benefit of a supplement: folic acid. It seems that persons with low levels of serum folate had increased dementia and Alzheimers disease. The study involved 30 Catholic nuns and has become a landmark study.

In those with moderate to severe hardening of the arteries in the brain, the average blood folic concentration was 34. Those with minimal or no hardening of the arteries had folate levels of 75. Those with the highest levels of folate (or folic acid) show less evidence of mini strokes and less evidence of atrophy or aging of the brain substance associated with hardening of the arteries. The higher levels of folate reduced the levels of an amino acid known as homocystine and this is probably the mechanism by which they protect against Alzheimers disease.

Dont sit back and wait until all the evidence is in. Supplemental folic acid - a very safe member of the B vitamin family - should be part of your daily supplements. Other studies show that it can protect you from heart disease, hardening of the arteries, and now it is linked to a protection from Alzheimers disease.

The usual recommendation of folic acid is 400 mcg. daily, but our personal studies indicate that 600 mcg. daily is better. This is our recommendation in our basic nutrient supplement. Take action now. God wants the number of your days to be fulfilled (Exodus 23:26).
